Piecing directions
- Make the Sunflower template by tracing onto template plastic or cut out a paper template and glue to plastic or cardboard.
- Trace around template onto wrong side of fabric and cut out. The Sunflower block needs 16 pieces plus one 6 1/2” circle.
- Fold each Sunflower segment in half lengthwise, right sides together; press or finger press. Stitch 1/4” from the upper edge. Trim the corner diagonally. Turn right side out. Align the seam with the pressed center crease. Press.

- Stitch the segments together, first by 2’s, then in groups of 4, etc. Press seams to one side.
- Crease the background square into quarters to help with aligning the Sunflower. Pin in place on a 12 1/2” background square. Either hand appliqué, machine stitch or blind stitch the Sunflower in place.
- Cut out a 6” cardboard. Sew a running stitch 1/8” from the outer edge of the 6 1/2” fabric circle. Place cardboard circle in the center and draw up the thread to tightly gather the circle. Press. Take out the cardboard, pin to the center of the Sunflower and hand appliqué, machine stitch or blind stitch in place.
- An alternative method for the center circle is to cut a 6” freezer paper circle. Press to the wrong side of the 6 1/2” fabric circle using a hot dry iron. Fold the edges over the freezer paper and baste close to the outer edge. Hand appliqué in place. Remove basting and pull out freezer paper from the wrong side.
