| Sew the Background Blocks
Cut a 9 1/2” square from Color B (white). Cut four Color A (green) 3 1/2” squares; mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of each. Place squares in each corner, right sides together with the Color B (white) square. Stitch on the marked line. Trim the corner away, leaving a 1/4” seam allowance. Press seams toward the corner. The block measures 9" finished (9 1/2" with seam allowances). Make 12 of these background blocks. Once a background block is pieced you’re ready to add the appliques.

Applique Flowers to the Background Blocks
With a pencil, trace applique shapes onto paper side of fusible web, allowing extra for tucking under adjacent pieces wherever needed. If shapes aren’t symmetrical, trace the reverse of the shape for machine applique. Cut out the shapes, leaving about a ¼-inch margin around each piece. Place fusible web shapes paper side up (you don’t want to fuse these to your iron!) on the wrong side of each corresponding applique fabric and fuse in place according to manufacturer’s instructions. Allow to cool, cut out the shapes on the marked line and peel off paper backing.
Place shapes centered right side up onto the background block. Fuse in place according to manufacturer’s instructions. Cover edges of each applique shape with hand or machine blanket stitch or machine zigzag or satin stitch. Or you may want to hand applique in the traditional manner of your choice.
