Cut the pieces

• Background: cut 16 - 2" x 2".
• Background: cut 4 - 3 1/2"" x 3 1/2".
• Light: cut 2 - 2" x 3 1/2".
• Light: cut 6 - 2" x 5".
• Light: cut 2 - 2" x 2".
• Medium: cut 2 - 2" x 3 1/2".
• Medium: cut 6 - 2" x 5".
• Medium: cut 2 - 2" x 2".
• Medium: cut 1 - 3 1/2"" x 3 1/2".
• Dark: cut 8 - 2" x 2".

Piecing directions

1. Mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of each of the 2" x 2" squares. To make each of the following units, lay a 2" x 2" square right sides together with a 2" x 3 1/2" or 2" x 5" rectangle, taking care that the angle of the diagonal is the same as in the diagram. Stitch on the marked line; trim the corner leaving a 1/4" seam allowance. Repeat for the bottom of the unit where necessary. For the light rectangles, press the seams toward outside. for the medium rectangles, press the seams toward the center.
         
   
   
      
   
   
2. Stitch together the Light/Background units and Background 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" squares. Stitch together the Medium/Background units and Background 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" squares. Stitch the units together into rows as illustrated. Stitch the three rows together to complete the block.
