Iris quilt block


Cut the pieces

  • Lavender: Cut 2 - 2” x 3½”.
  • Lavender: Cut 1 - 3½” x 4½”.
  • Lavender: Cut 1 - 2¾” x 2¾”; cut diagonally twice to make 4 triangles.
  • Lavender: Cut 2 - 2” x 2"; mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of each square.
  • Purple: Cut 1 - 3½” x 4½”.
  • Purple: Cut 1 - 3” x 3";cut diagonally once to make 2 triangles.
  • Yellow: Cut 1 - 2¾” x 2¾”; cut diagonally twice to make 4 triangles.
  • Dk green: Cut 1 - 1½” x 3”.
  • Medium green: Cut 2 - 3½” x 6".
  • Blue: Cut 4 - 3½” x 3½”; mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of each square.
  • Blue: Cut 6 - 1½” x 1½”; mark a diagonal line on the wrong side of each square.
  • Blue: Cut 2 - 3½” x 4½”.
  • Blue: Cut 2 - 1½” x 3½”.
  • Blue: Cut 2 - 1½” x 3”.
  • Blue: Cut 2 - 2" x 7".
  • Blue: Cut 2 - 2" x 6".

Piecing directions

  1. Leaf units – Make 2
    Place a marked blue 3½” square right sides together with a medium green 3½” x 6”. Stitch on the marked line, trim the corner, ¼“ from the seam, and press seam toward corner. Repeat on the opposite corner.

  2. Side petal units – Make 2
    Place a marked blue 1½” square right sides together with a lavender 2” x 3½”. Stitch on the marked line, trim the corner, ¼“ from the seam, and press seam toward corner. To this stitch a blue 3½” x 4½” on one side, a 1½” x 3½” on the other. Stitch these units to the leaf units.

  3. Center petal/stem unit – Make 1
    Petals:
    Place a marked blue 1½” square right sides together with a lavender 3½” x 4½” for the bottom petal, a purple 3½” x 4½” for the top petal. Stitch as for the side petal units. Repeat for adjoining corner.
    Flower center:
    Cut the lavender and the yellow 2¾” squares in half diagonally twice to make 4 triangles each (you will only use two of each). Stitch together a yellow and a lavender triangle, as illustrated. Stitch these units to a purple triangle cut from a 3” square (only one of these will be used).
    Stem:
    Stitch together two blue and one dark green 1½” x 3” rectangles. Stitch this to the petals and flower center.

  4. Outer petal units – Make 2
    Place a marked lavender 2” square right sides together with a blue 2” x 7”. Stitch on the marked line, trim the corner, ¼“ from the seam, and press seam toward corner. To this stitch a blue 2” x 6”. Stitch these units to the leaf and center units to complete the block.
